In the second quarter of 2024, the Volkswagen Group sold almost 181,000 electric cars worldwide, which corresponds to the previous year's level. Sales decreased in Europe and the USA, while a significant increase was recorded in China.

Total sales and electric car content

Between April and June 2024, Volkswagen sold a total of 2.24 million vehicles, which corresponds to a decline of 3.8 percent compared to the previous year. Of these vehicles, 180,800 had a pure electric drive, which makes a share of 8.1 percent. For comparison: In the second quarter of 2023, the electric share was 7.7 percent and 6.5 percent in the first quarter of 2024.

Half -year balance

In the first half of 2024, the Volkswagen Group delivered a total of 317,200 electric cars, which corresponds to a share of 7.3 percent. This number is just below the 321,600 electric cars of the first half of 2023, which corresponds to a slight decline of 1.4 percent.

Regional differences

In China, Volkswagen had a significant increase in sales of 45 percent, with an increase from 62,400 to 90,600 electric cars in the first half of 2024. In contrast, sales fell by 15 percent each in Europe and the USA. Nevertheless, Europe with 184,100 electric cars sold remains the largest market for Volkswagen in the first half of the year. In the United States, 25,200 electric cars were sold in the same period.

Model ranking

In the model ranking of the best-selling electric cars of the Volkswagen Group in the first half of 2024, the SUV models VW ID.4 and ID.5 lead with 86,800 units sold. They are followed by the compact car VW ID.3 and the Audi Q4 e-tron (including Sportback). Other top models are the Skoda Enyaq, Cupra Born, Audi Q8 E-Ttron and the VW ID. Buzz.

Order and future developments

The order stock for electric cars in Western Europe has risen by 124 percent to around 170,000 vehicles. This is partly due to the upcoming start of the deliveries of new models such as the VW ID.7 Tourer, Audi Q6 E-Tron and Porsche Macan Electric. In the second half of the year, the group also expects additional momentum at plug-in hybrids, since new models with purely electrical ranges of up to 143 kilometers come onto the market.

Conclusion

Despite regional declines, the Volkswagen Group is stable in the electric car business overall and still sees great growth potential in China. With new models and a strong order stock, the company is optimistic about the future of electromobility.
