VW uses onsemi silicon carbide mosfets for its SSP platform
from Constantin Hoffmann to Jul 24, 2024
Onsemi becomes the main supplier of performance haulders for the Scalable Systems Platform (SSP) from Volkswagen.
From 2026, the new SSP platform is to form the basis for a large number of electric vehicles from the Volkswagen Group. Onsemi will deliver silicon carbide mosfets (sic) in power modules for the electric drive of the SSP vehicles.
The advantages of SIC technology:
- Lower line and switching losses: This leads to a higher range and efficiency of the electric vehicles.
- Higher performance density: Enables compact and lighter traction inverter.
- Robust supply chain: The SIC mosfets are manufactured in Europe Which VW guarantees a high supply security.
Onsemi Elitesic M3e Mosfets:
- Onsemi uses its latest generation of SIC-MOSFETS for the Power Box, The Elitesic M3E.
- These MOSFETs offer particularly high efficiency and compactness.
- They enable an increase in performance of up to 20% with the same traction inverter housing.
Expansion of SIC production in Europe:
- Onsemi is expanding its manufacturing capacities for SIC haul managers in the Czech Republic.
- The new production site will include the entire production chain, From wafer production to packaging.
- The investment is related to the order of Volkswagen.
Conclusion:
Cooperation between Volkswagen and Onsemi is an important step for the development of more efficient and more powerful electric vehicles. Onsemi's SIC technology will contribute to to improve the range and performance of the SSP vehicles.
